Alumasc has significantly expanded its Harmer Roof Drainage range, making it the most comprehensive offer on the market from a single manufacturer.

With the addition of new products and the launch of its new Drainage Calculator software, Alumasc’s Harmer brand offers benefits to all professionals involved in the design and specification of rainwater and roof drainage products.

Alumasc recently unveiled the innovative Drainage Calculator software at Ecobuild 2012, where it was heralded a major step forward for the industry. It is quick and easy to use, turning the process of foul drainage system sizing and flat roof and eaves drainage calculation, into an elementary process.

Another significant development is the introduction of a comprehensive range of cast iron rainwater outlets to create competitive choice for designers who have a preference for cast iron drainage products. The new range of outlets provides for inverted and warm roof construction whilst improving fire safety as well as accommodating wheel load capacities to meet the requirements for car park and podium deck drainage applications.

Alumasc’s Harmer brand is already the leading name in flat roof drainage, with an established product range consisting of aluminium and insulated rainwater outlets. A new Mini Balcony Outlet is now included within the aluminium range, featuring a shallow sump and interchangeable gratings in stainless steel or nickel bronze for applications requiring improvement of finish and enhanced aesthetics.

The Harmer Modulock system consists of an all new product offer comprising an adjustable linear channel system that meets the requirements of Part M Level Access compliance manufactured in galvanised or stainless steel. The new Modulock offer also extends the successful range of adjustable deck supports by simplifying levelling and adjustability during and after installation. The introduction of these products has significantly improved the choice and cost efficiency of raised deck drainage solutions available for green roofs, terraces, walkways and ballasted flat roof construction.

The Harmer range is suited to different roof types including structural concrete, metal deck, timber deck, warm roof, cold roof, green roof and inverted roof.  Harmer Roof outlets can be used with all types of membrane including asphalt, built-up felt, single ply and wet-applied systems and are suitable for applications such as  flat and low pitched roofs, car parks decks, factories and workshops, balconies and roof terraces. All products feature premium quality materials chosen for their inherent strength and durability, for ease of installation and long-life service.

Paul Hetherington, MD of Alumasc Rainwater and Drainage, comments: “No other manufacturer offers such an extensive roof drainage range at such competitive prices. The on-going development of our products and services is essential in supporting the industry – in addition to the improved range, Alumasc’s Harmer technical support is second to none and our new calculation software is proving a major benefit to contractors and specifiers.”

Harmer SML, the lightweight cast iron drainage system from Alumasc, has an established reputation for offering a total solution for Soil and Waste disposal, using leading edge cast iron technology and boasting a proven track record of more than 30 years’ use throughout Europe.

Harmer SML is the optimum choice for soil and waste pipework, offering many advantages for contractors and end users both in terms of installation and performance. Cast iron is inherently robust and highly resistant to damage while its outstanding dimensional stability and high tensile strength eliminate the need for expansion joints and reduce the amount of fixing bracketry required. It is also non-combustible, offers excellent noise attenuation, tested to BS EN 14366: 2004 and is 100% recyclable.

The pipework comes with the option of two-part ductile couplings or unique stainless steel ‘Duo’ couplings that enable faster fixing and built-in electrical continuity, whilst the fixing positions on one side of the coupling allows ease of fixing in confined spaces. The unique Duomat Fixing Tool enables contractors to reduce installation time for the SML system by 50%.

The Duomat Fixing Tool is unique to the Harmer SML system and is suitable for use with any power drill. The tool enables both of the coupling bolts to be tightened simultaneously to the optimum torque setting of 7Nm-9Nm. Two independent preset clutches ensure the correct torque setting, irrespective of the pipe tolerances. The simple toggle adjustment allows for perfect Allen bit alignment for all couplings from 50mm to 300mm diameter and once fitted, the stainless steel duo coupling is totally secure.

John Whybrow, of Alumasc’s Approved Installer PSI, regularly installs Harmer SML using the Duomat Tool. He comments: “Having installed drainage systems both with and without the Duomat Tool, I can state quite confidently that Duomat installations take around half the time.

“The efficient simultaneous tightening of the Duo coupling system has resulted in impressive time and labour savings on site for a significant number of our installations.”

Harmer SML pipes are available in standard 3m lengths, with diameters of 50mm-400mm plus a comprehensive range of fittings and accessories. The system is BBA Agrément Certified fully compliant with BS EN 877 and is CE Marked to European Standards.

Harmer SML Soil and Waste Systems, Roof Outlets and Floor Drains were used at Mossley Mill in Newtownabbey which has achieved the Times/Gestener Office of the Year Award, NI Construction Excellence Award, RICS Award and Civic Trust Award.

Designed by Ostick & Williams, Mossley Mill was originally a flax spinning mill built in 1834 by a local cotton manufacturer. The recent £16million redevelopment by Graham Construction was undertaken in two phases, restoring the mill to its former glory. It is now home to Newtownabbey Borough Council and a Civic Arts and Cultural Centre with a new theatre, museum and conferencing facilities.

Harmer SML cast iron socketless soil and waste system and Harmer Floor Drains were chosen for the public facilities in the Theatre. SML is an Agrement certified system and meets European Standard BS EN 877. This lightweight, dry jointed pipework system is suitable for both soil and waste or rainwater installations, offering ease of installation and low maintenance requirements.

Harmer Floor Drains comprise drain bodies in powder coated aluminium, available with an extensive range of round and square grates in stainless steel or nickel bronze. The range is suited to virtually any interior drainage application and all types of flooring. The drain bodies are available either trapped or untrapped, with vertical or horizontal spigot connection and with or without side outlets for connection to sink, bath shower and waste.

High performance Harmer AV Roof outlets were chosen for the flat roof due to their high flow rates and suitability for use with all waterproofing membranes.  They are available in aluminium alloy or gunmetal with spigot or screw connection for vertical, horizontal or 45º discharge.

Harmer SML, Floor Drains and Roof Outlets are fully compatible, enabling flexible design solutions to be found for all soil, waste and rainwater drainage applications.

Backwater Protection from Alumasc

Posted by Nicola Perrins

Jul30

Kessel_Top_whiteWe are all aware that water is a valuable resource and that Rainwater Management Systems are being increasingly specified in many environmentally-friendly domestic and commercial build projects.

But as well as saving water on a daily basis, we also need to be aware of what precautions can be taken for occasions when there is suddenly too much of it.

The lesser talked about phenomenon of Backwater damage is an increasing threat due to global warming. Backwater has always existed, but as the climate changes and sudden rainfall becomes more common, drainage and sewer systems can be overwhelmed, resulting in expensive flood damage.

The Harmer Kessel Backflow range from Alumasc ensures buildings are protected against the costly affects of backwater damage.

Manufactured from robust PVC, the range includes automatic backflow stops which, under normal conditions, allow the free passage of waste water through the system. In instances of heavy rain, flooding or blocked pipes, the valves prevent storm and flood water backing up in the pipes, thus avoiding damage.

Meteorogical experts have concluded that more and more unexpected rainfall is likely in the future, making the installation of Backwater solutions a cost effective method of prevention that would otherwise result in very costly refurbishment.

The German Association of the Aluminium Industry (GDA) is to launch a UK press campaign promoting the use of Aluminium across all industry sectors.

Fabrication_2

Aluminium fabrication at Alumasc

At Alumasc, we have been aware of the true sustainable qualities of aluminium for many years. Despite the material being one of the most plentiful metals in the world, it is also one of the most recyclable. About 75 percent of all aluminium ever made has been in the metal loop since the year 1888, with as much as 95% of aluminium in the construction sector being recycled stock.

Alumasc offer a wide range of high performance aluminium products. The strength, formability, corrosion resistance and overall versatility of aluminium make it particularly suited for use in rainwater and drainage solutions for all types of building.

Heritage Cast Aluminium from Alumasc

Harmer Roof Outlets chosen for Gloucester Quays

Posted by Nicola Perrins

Jul6

Harmer Roof Outlets from Alumasc have been chosen for a challenging installation at Gloucester’s largest retail development.

Designed by Dyer Associates of London, Gloucester Quays is a £200million scheme, comprising over 150,000m2 of floor space and an 18,000m2 Factory Outlet Centre. Located alongside the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, the development is a key part of the regeneration of Gloucester’s historic town centre, setting a benchmark in contemporary design. The main contractor was Bovis Lend Lease.

Alumasc worked closely with installers T Clarke Bristol Ltd to overcome the challenge presented by complex roof build-up at Gloucester Quays’ car park. Various areas of asphalt and liquid waterproofing membranes demanded the specification of a robust yet versatile drainage system able to accommodate the differing build-up thicknesses. Harmer Car Park Outlets were fitted using a double clamping ring which could be adjusted to suit the requirements of the waterproofing layer.

The Harmer system enabled fast installation, with a flush-fitting, hard-wearing result capable of withstanding cars and light commercial vehicles to a maximum single wheel loading of 1 tonne and total weight of approximately 255 kg/m2.

The Harmer Roof Outlet range includes Detail outlets for use in multi-level car parks, balconies and gulleys, AV high capacity outlets for flat roof projects and Insulated outlets used mainly in metal deck warm and inverted roof installations. They are all lightweight, durable and non-corrodible, offering ease of installation in projects that present awkward roof detailing. Offering high performance and minimal maintenance requirements, Harmer Roof Outlets are diecast in LM6 aluminium silicon alloy to BS 1490: 1988, offering a BBA approved powder coating on grate and clamping collar.

In accordance with Alumasc’s environmental policy, Harmer Roof Outlets are manufactured under the ISO14001:2004 environmental management standard using 100% recyclable Aluminium.
